History & Development of CLHSCO

The Chung Ling High School Chinese Orchestra (CLHSCO) is Penang Island's 1st Chinese Orchestral group. Since its inception, CLHSCO has been in existence for the past 37 years. Formerly, CLHSCO was known as "Chung Ling High School Chinese Society's Chinese Music Section". The orchestra was inaugurated in 1969 under the initiative of several school teachers. The teacher advisors of that very year itself were Mr. Chuah Bo Leng, Mr. Leong Run Zhou, Mdm. Boo He Qin, whilst the chairman was Xu Han Ru.

Initially, the orchestra had only a mere 10 members. In addition, musical instruments were scarce and instructors were greatly deprived of. Consequently, the orchestra only had the opportunity to perform years later. All musical instruments were generously supplied by the teacher advisors of the orchestra and the school teachers.

Since 1970, the orchestra members' musical skills and technical competencies improved tremendously. Besides that, the number of members increased remarkably, thus bringing the orchestra into its "Golden Era". In the year 1973, the orchestra had more than 100 members and every performance received rave reviews from audiences.

In the year 1970, the orchestra left the CLHS Chinese Society to be an independent uniform unit with the name "CLHS Chinese Orchestra".

Since the year 1978, many members had graduated. This resulted in the decline and partial lost of musical skills of the orchestra. Subsequently, only the woodwind and brass section is left. At the same period, the school principal, Mr. Yap Rong He, noticing the extensive deterioration of the orchestra, invited alumni members to return to school for the purpose for guiding the new generation of members. Subsequently, the orchestra's standard has regained that of its former glorious days.

From the year 1980 to 1982, CLHSCO participated actively in various competitions. The orchestra members never failed to deliver their best and was always en route to victory. This brought to another golden era of the orchestra. Since 1990, the orchestra has been under the baton of famous Chinese orchestral conductor, Mr. Lim Soon Huat. Under his musicianship and
meticulous teaching, the orchestra grew from strength to strength.

Marching into the new millennium, the orchestra participate Penang state's PESTA MUZIK in 2001 and was awarded Sijil Cemerlang for Full Orchestra category and Solo category. In the same year, the orchestra held its 1st small scale concert in the school's music room, named "Tuo Yong" (Metamorphosis).

In the year 2002, CLHSCO once again took part in PESTA MUZIK and was awarded 2 Sijil Cemerlangs for Solo and Sijil Kepujian for Full Orchestra category. In that year too, the orchestra held another small scale concert named "He Yan" (Lotus Banquet). The orchestra had also participated in various national full orchestra and solo competitions to gain experience and to raise its standards.

1st of May, 2004, the orchestra succeeded in holding its maiden concert, "Xian Yue Feng Qing" (The Charm of the Melodies) in the prestigious Dewan Sri Pinang.

CLHSCO participated in the biennial 2004 Malaysia's Chinese Orchestra Competition, held in Kuala Lumpur's Thean Hou Temple, but did not manage to enter the final. However the competition left fond memories for members who joined the competition.
On 30th of July, CLHSCO held a concert in the newly refurbished school hall with the name "Yi Xiang Tian Kai" (Fantastic Dreams).

On 22nd of December, 2005, CLHSCO sent a few representatives to join the 7TH MALAYSIA'S CHINESE MUSICAL FESTIVAL - NATIONAL SOLO COMPETITION, held in Penang Chinese Town Hall.
On the very next day (23rd of December, 2005) , CLHSCO was once again jubilant to bag 2nd Prize for the NATIONAL CHINESE ORCHESTRA COMPETITION, held in Dewan Sri Pinang.

On 22nd of April, 2006, CLHSCO held its second large-scale concert in Dewan Sri Pinang, entitled "Yun Yue" (Rendezvous of Melodies). On 14th of March,1007,CLHSCO presented "Nan Qing Bei Yun"
